Breast ReductionBy Sarah D. Bernstein Ph.D. CosmeticSurgeryHelp.org Breast reduction is the method through which the size of the breast is reduced surgically. It is done mostly in women and is also called as reduction mammaplasty. Breast reduction is carried out by excising glandular tissue, skin and fat of the breasts. Reduction mammaplasty is done on women with large breasts. The weight of the breasts can give rise to various problems like neck, circulation, shoulder, and breathing problems. The weight of the breasts may also cause the brassiere straps to irritate the skin. Breast reduction is done not only to feel comfortable, but also to derive a proportionate look. Reduction mammaplasty is done not only to give a firmer and smaller breasts, but also to reduce the size of the nipples. The surgery is done by keeping the patient under general anesthesia. Before the operation, the doctor and the patient jointly decide the new location for the nipples and areolas. Breast reduction involves the anchor-shaped incision that circles the areola. The incision moves downwards following the natural curve of the breast. All the extra fat, skin and glandular tissues are removed. Following this, the nipple and the areola are shifted to their new location. The skin that is retained on either sides of the areola is reattached. To reduce the scar left, a number of treatments have started. The Le Jour method leaves only one vertical scar behind. Women with large pendulum breasts face a large number of medical problems that result due to skeletal deformities along with breathing problems. Moreover, excessively large breasts can make women self conscious and uncomfortable. Breast reduction is done more for physical relief than for mere cosmetic enhancement. It is not recommended for those women who breastfeed. It is best done on those who have fully developed breasts and know the procedures and expectations from the surgery. Since breast reduction involves a surgery, it can also give rise to infection, bleeding, and reaction to anesthesia. Antibiotic creams are there to treat the small sores that may develop surrounding the nipples after the surgery. Breast reduction can leave a permanent and noticeable scar behind. It can also give a slightly mismatched breast sizes and irregularly positioned nipples. It may pose problem for future breastfeeding as it removes a lot of milk ducts that leads to the nipples. In rare cases, the patient may also become permanently numb to any feelings in the nipples and breasts. The surgeon who will operate on you will take various pictures of your breast before operation for referring it during and after surgery. Before the surgery is done, you will need to follow the guidelines laid down by your surgeon on food, drinks, intake of vitamins and minerals, and various other medications. Breast reduction surgery usually takes around two to four hours. In complicated cases, it may last for a longer period of time. During the operation, you will be under general anesthesia and will sleep throughout the operation. The stitches after the operation are done around the area surrounding the areola. It follows a vertical line and moves downwards. Liposuction is sometimes used to remove excess fat to reduce the breast size. Liposuction leaves very little scar behind. After the completion of breast reduction surgery, a surgical bra is used to wrap the breasts. To drain off fluids and blood, small tube is placed in individual breasts for a couple of days. Coughing and movement can cause pain for a few days. Various medicines will be prescribed by your surgeon to lessen the intensity of the pain.
