Cosmetic Surgery

By Sarah D. Bernstein Ph.D. CosmeticSurgeryHelp.org

The desire to become beautiful by altering some of the undesirable physical features and trying to conceal tell-tale physical signs of aging is a universal phenomenon. Cosmetic surgery, which is a specialization of plastic surgery, has been developed to help the above corrective procedure.

Since the last five years, there has been an escalation of more than 50% in the number of cosmetic surgery procedures, which now stands at about 65,000. These procedures are mostly in the following fields: breast enlargement, breast augmentation surgery, nose reshaping (rhinoplasty), face-lifts, liposuction, cosmetic dermatology, facial plastic surgery, male plastic surgery, vision correction surgery, cosmetic dentistry, and hair replacement surgery.

Cosmetic surgery signifies that the patient does not need such a procedure but chooses to undergo the same of his/her own free will in order to improve the appearance. This is the reason why it is also called elective surgery.

Cosmetic surgery is mostly used in the following fields:

  • Eliminating or enhancing the look of birthmarks, scars, moles, warts, tattoos, cholesterol skin deposition (xanthelasmas) and other disfigurements,
  • Rectifying defacing inborn flaws, and
  • Rectifying faults of appearance as desired by the patient (elective cosmetic surgery).

It is important to get as much information about the cosmetic surgery before you go in for such a procedure by finding out from your doctor about the measures that you should adopt so that the surgery is successful. You should try to learn about what the surgery will involve before, during and after the procedure and the steps that you should take if there are any complications after you return home. Most surgeons will be very candid about all these aspects, the risks involved in the surgery and the results that might be expected. They also provide written guidelines for the patient regarding care to be taken in the preoperative and postoperative periods.

Mostly, minimal amount of anesthesia is needed for this procedure to the extent that twilight sleep or light general anesthesia might be administered by a capable anesthetist. However, each patient’s need of the level of anesthesia is different and they only have to remain in the surgical center till they have recovered and are then allowed to go home.

The convalescence period is also different for each person depending upon the extent of surgical procedure. Temporary swelling, bruising or discomfort might take place in some cases but pain, if any, can be alleviated with medicines.

Since cosmetic surgery is done as per the choice of the patient, it should only be undertaken when requisite finances are available. The cost of the entire procedure is normally required to be paid upfront and insurance does not cover this cost. They would only cover for reconstructive surgery for deformities caused by accidents or for improving nasal obstruction that are caused by nasal septal deviation.

Cosmetic surgery gives a happy feeling, improves your self-esteem and heightens your self-confidence besides making you look better. This surgery produces massive changes both on your exterior and interior surface. As far as risk is concerned, normally every surgery involves a certain amount of risk and so does cosmetic surgery but its outcome depends both on the surgeon and the patient. There is no doubt that the surgeon’s expertise is very important but the patient’s health, ability to heal and collaboration is equally important for the success of the procedure.

In order to achieve the target of happiness and self-satisfaction with cosmetic surgery, it should be properly planned and expertly executed with the full cooperation of the patient who must have realistic expectations. Remember that cosmetic surgery cannot produce miracles but it is still a very effective procedure.
