Rhinoplasty

By Dr. David A. Atkins CosmeticSurgeryHelp.org

The function and appearance of a person’s nose can be improved with the help of plastic surgery known as Rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is also called a “nose job”. Rhinoplasty helps to reshape the nose by either increasing or decreasing the size of the nose, changing the shape of the tip of the nose, minimizing the span of the nostrils, and altering the angle between the nose and the upper lip. Rhinoplasty is also done to rectify injury and birth defects, and also for providing relief from breathing problems.

Rhinoplasty helps not only to enhance your confidence, but also your look. Rhinoplasty is done best on those who are in search of improving their look and not after perfection. Age is a very big factor in performing Rhinoplasty. Teenagers are generally not operated. Sushruta, a well known physician, first developed Rhinoplasty. Intranasal Rhinoplasty was first performed by John Orlando Roe in 1887. Marked improvement in Rhinoplasty was brought about by Jacques Joseph in 1898 for resizing and reshaping the nose of those who were embarrassed due to the awkward size and defects in their nose.

Rhinoplasty is usually performed with the help of general anesthetic or local anesthetic. Rhinoplasty is performed by making minute incisions on the skin that separates the nostrils called the columella. The soft tissues are first separated form the original structure. Then the deformed cartilage and bone is reshaped. Sometimes, the cartilage of the nose of the patient is reshaped to add strength and enhance the structure of the nose. Synthetic implant is common for reconstructing the nose when the normal nose structure is deformed and damaged. But then, the alloplastic synthetic materials that are used in synthetic implants may often cause extrusion and migration for a long term basis in the patient. Sometimes, even the cartilage from the ear, rib or septum is used.

Rhinoplasty may give rise to some possible complications like infection, reaction to anesthesia, and nosebleed. When the surgery is complete, burst blood vessel may appear on the surface of the skin that may stay permanently. In Rhinoplasty, if the nostrils are very wide, then small wedges of the skin are removed from the base that helps to narrow down the shape by bringing them closer. There are some basic preparations to be done before the surgery. You need to follow the guidelines given by your surgeon on food, drinks, smoking, intake of vitamins and minerals, talking, and taking proper care of the face.

Local or general anesthesia is used during Rhinoplasty. Local anesthesia sedates you lightly making the nose and adjacent area numb to any feelings. You will stay awake throughout the surgery with feeling the pain. But is general anesthesia is used; you will be asleep while the operation will be performed on you. Rhinoplasty last up to two hours, usually it is performed within one hour. During Rhinoplasty, the nose skin is removed from the framework of cartilage. The bone is reshaped. The skin is then again placed on top of the reshaped cartilage or bone. After the completion of the surgery, plastic splint or nasal packs are applied to stabilize the wall the divides the air passages called the septum.

It will take sometime for your nose to get back its original shape. The bruised nose will swell for two to three days. It is the time when you can apply cold compress to reduce the pain. You can even expect some bleeding with a stuffy feeling for some weeks. After two weeks, the stitches and splints are removed. Rhinoplasty is the best way to achieve a nose with a straighter bridge, improved angle between nose and upper lip, and a well defined nose tip.
